LAME可以说是MP3历史上革命性的东西.MP3最受争议的就是音质问题,其高频损失很大,很多MP3编码器粗糙的编码算法不但导致高频丢失,还丢失了许多细节,类似吉他擦弦的感觉在MP3中是找不到的.在对MP3快要失望时,Lame从天而降,很多人抱着怀疑的态度试用了她,结果令人惊奇不已,马上删除了硬盘上所有的MP3和其他编码器,全部用Lame重新来过.
LAME development started around mid-1998. Mike Cheng started it as apatch against the 8hz-MP3 encoder sources. After some quality concernsraised by others, he decided to start from scratch based on the dist10sources. His goal was only to speed up the dist10 sources, and leaveits quality untouched. That branch (a patch against the referencesources) became Lame 2.0, and only on Lame 3.81 did we replaced of alldist10 code, making LAME no more only a patch.
The project quickly became a team project. Mike Cheng eventually leftleadership and started working on tooLame, an MP2 encoder. Mark Taylorbecame leader and started pursuing increased quality in addition tobetter speed. He can be considered the initiator of the LAME project inits current form. He released version 3.0 featuring gpsycho, a newpsychoacoustic model he developed.
In early 2003 Mark left project leadership, and since then the projecthas been lead through the cooperation of the active developers(currently 4 individuals).
Today, LAME is considered the best MP3 encoder at mid-high bitrates andat VBR, mostly thanks to the dedicated work of its developers and theopen source licensing model that allowed the project to tap intoengineering resources from all around the world. Both quality and speedimprovements are still happening, probably making LAME the only MP3encoder still being actively developed.
